Highlands and Islands
The most spectacular scenery in Scotland are in the Highlands. The mountains of the Cairngorms form the most striking landscape in the world. In the Cairngorms National Park you can explore the way-marked walks and perhaps spot red deer on the hilltops. Visit the Highland Wildlife Park near Aviemore to see Scottish wild cat and Mercedes, the polar bear, or nearby Leault Farm to watch sheepdogs at work under the control of a shepherd. You may even be lucky enough to spot the Loch Ness Monster from the shores of Loch Ness at Historic Scotland’s Urquhart Castle.
To the north are Dunrobin Castle and Dornoch Cathedral, Clynelish Distillery and the Falls of Shin. You can head to the north coast and visit the Castle of Mey, near Thurso, once the home of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. This small and homely castle is open to visitors, as is the beautiful walled garden - and there is a restaurant with delicious home-baking.
If you decide to head west, then Gairloch (wildlife cruises and impressive seascapes), Corrieschalloch Gorge and the National Trust for Scotland's Inverewe Garden provide a variation in what to see and do. And here is the most spectacular scenery in Scotland, so make sure you spend time here..
Head for the Outer Hebrides (ferry from Ullapool and from Uig on Skye) and the beautiful sandy beaches and the turquiose seas will take your breath away, while the Black House and the Standing Stones of Calanais tell the story of the Scotland of centuries past.
