Perthshire and Angus
In just an hour from Glasgow and Edinburgh, you can be in Perthshire and Angus. Perthshire is the heart of Scotland, with lochs and woods and farms. Pitlochry, Dunkeld and Blair Atholl – all attractive holiday centres with Thistle Parks nearby. Save on the fuel and take short day trips to explore the surrounding area. Blair Castle at Blair Atholl, is a fascinating castle, with extensive grounds; in the village there is a heritage museum, which is well worth a visit. The Crannog Centre at Kenmore is the re-creation of a loch dwelling and a great place for children, whilst a short distance away, Dewar's World of Whisky at Aberfeldy is the place for whisky-lovers. And if you want to pick up fresh produce visit the monthly Perth Farmers' Market or ask the staff at the caravan park you are staying at about farm shops in the area.
Angus has the Angus Glens for superb low-level walks and wildlife-watching, Monrtose Basin for birdlife, Arbroath Abbey where in 1320 Robert the Bruce and the Scottish noblemen swore independence, and Lunan Bay south of Monstrose, perhaps the most beautiful beach in Scotland. In Dundee, home of the "Beano" and the "Dandy", children enjoy the hands-on activities at Sensation. Nearby is RRS Discovery, in which Scott sailed to the Antarctic; you can visit the ship and learn more about the expedition in the excellent visitor centre - great for kids and for adults. Then visit Verdant Works, which tells the story of the jute-workers, who worked in what was once the mainstay industry of the town.
