Ayrshire, Clyde Valley, Dumfries and Galloway
Ayrshire
Ayrshire, to the south of Glasgow, is the land of Robert Burns, Scotland’s national poet, and here are places which recall not only his poetry, but also his life. In Alloway, just south of Ayr, is his birthplace, with a museum alongside it. Not far away is Alloway Kirk, in the graveyard of which the poem ‘Tam O’ Shanter’ is set. But Ayrshire is much more than Burns Country – suss out the beaches near Ayr and Culzean Castle (NTS), with its walled garden and large wooded estate.
The Clyde Valley
New Lanark, the World Heritage Site, is a must for a visit - the village, famously associated with Robert Owen, dates from the Industrial Revolution and you can visit several of the buildings, as well as visit the Falls of Clyde at certain times of the year. To the south is the attractive town of Biggar, with a couple of small museums.
Dumfries and Galloway
In this part of Scotland, there are an abundance of places to visit - Caerlaverock Castle south of Dumfries, Bladnoch Distillery, New Abbey Cornmill, Cream o' Galloway Farm, Castle Kennedy Gardens and Glenluce Abbey. And most famous of all is Gretna Green, where marriages are still performed. If you enjoy books, then head for Wigtown on the Solway Firth where there are several second-hand bookshops and a farmers' market on a regular basis. And then on to Whithorn, where Christianity was first introduced to Scotland and for many years a place of pilgrimage. There are also several good beaches.
