Perthshire - The Heart of Scotland
Perthshire is in the heart of Scotland. Dunkeld and Blair Atholl are attractive villages just off the A9, the main road to the Highlands. Pitlochry is a busy town, with a theatre, just south of the historic village of Blair Atholl, with one of the most interesting castles in Scotland - Blair Castle, which also has gardens and a large estate with walking trails.. Highland Perthshhire is walking territory and where better to go than the Tay Forest Park, which is in the care of the Forestry Commission Scotland, who have established an extensive network of walks.
Just north of Pitlochry is Faskally Forest, a must-visit; with its rich mix of woodland species, and plenty of wildlife.
The county of Angus, fertile farmland, is less well known to many visitors; Blairgowrie is a busy market town, and Alyth, not far away, is a good starting point from which to explore the Angus Glens, ideal for walking - try Glen Prosen, Glen Isla, Glen Clova and Glen Esk.
Arbroath on the east coast has good beaches and the nearby village of Monifieth is a good place to stay. For lovers of Scotland’s heritage, Arbroath Abbey is a must; because it was here, in 1320, that Robert the Bruce and his nobles signed the Declaration of Independence from England, vowing that never would Scots submit to the English. Reminiscent of a gentler age, is the House of Dun near Montrose epitomising the way of life of the landed gentry.
Perthshire and Angus are also great for bird-watchers. Loch of the Lowes near Dunkeld has ospreys, great crested grebes, coots, mallards, herons and goldeneye ducks. Montrose Basin is great for sea-birds and migrating birds, If you play golf, nd don't forget Carnoustie, one of the world’s great golf courses.
Dundee, City Of Discovery: On the Firth of Tay, is the home of the RRS Discovery – the ship on which Robert Falcon Scott sailed to the Antarctic. The ship and its visitor centre present a vivid picture of what life was like for these intrepid explorers. Opening later this year is the V&A museum in Scotland, dedicated to design.
